THE BODY BY KLOSS

Voici un nouvel article qui concerne les photos qui ont été publiées dans l'édition de décembre 2011 de VOGUE Italia, photos mettant en vedette la mannequin américaine Karlie Kloss et prises par Steven Meisel. Je vous montre en premier les images, car elles vous mettront en contexte.

This is a new post about the pictures that were published in the December 2011 edition of VOGUE Italia, pictures featuring American model Karlie Kloss and taken by Steven Meisel. I'll show the images first, since they will put you in context.

Vous vous en douterez, ces photos ont causé tout un émoi sur la planète mode. Les critiques sur sa physionomie ont fusé de partout, plusieurs critiquant sa «maigreur extrême», «ses muscles et os saillants», et «ses positions qui mettent en valeur son corps décharné». D'autres ont accusé un usage abusif de Photoshop, particulièrement dans la première image, où sa hanche ne semble pas être rattachée à son corps. Entre autre mauvaise nouvelle, plusieurs de ces photos ont été utilisées sur par les sites web pro-ana, cette terrifiante communauté prônant l'anorexie comme un mode de vie, ce qui a poussé Franca Sozzani, la rédactrice en chef de la publication, a retiré l'une d'elles de son blog officiel.


You can imagine, these pictures caused a huge stir in the fashion community. Critics about her physical appearance popped everywhere, many criticizing her «extreme thinness», her «protruding muscles and bones», and the «positions that are enhancing her emaciated body». Others accused an abusive use of Photoshop, especially in the first picture, where her hip doesn't seem attached to the rest of her body. In other sad news, many of these pictures were used on pro-ana websites, this terrifying community that advocate anorexia as a lifestyle, which drived Franca Sozzani, the editor in chief of the magazine, to remove one of those from her official blog.

Du côté des critiques positives, plusieurs ont défendu Kloss et dénoncé ses détracteurs, en disant que la maigreur n'est pas nécessairement mauvaise et qu'un certain pourcentage des femmes ont une telle silhouette naturellement, sans pour autant avoir des troubles alimentaires, ce qui les expose aux critiques. Franca Sozzani, elle, a dit regretter d'avoir retiré la photo de son blog, ce qui aurait jeter de l'huile sur le feu selon elle. Elle prétend que les critiques connaissent mal la photographie et que les déformations optiques sont le résultat non pas de Photoshop mais de techniques connues en photographie. Finalement, il faut noter que Sozzani défend depuis longtemps la représentation de tous les types de femme et qu'elle assure que Kloss est en santé.

On the side of the positive feedback, many have defended Kloss and denounced her critics, saying thinness is not necessarily a bad thing and that a certain amount of women have such a figure naturally, without having eating disorders, a situation that expose them to critics. Franca Sozzani has on her side stated she regretted removing the picture from her blog, and that it added fuel to the fire. She pretends critics don't know enough about photography and that optical distortions are the result of known photographic technics, and not Photoshop. Finally, it is important to note that Sozzani have been defending body diversity among women for a long time and that Kloss is healthy.

La principale intéressée s'est défendue de son côté contre les rumeurs d'anorexie. Elle a rappelé sa formation en ballet qui lui a conféré un corps musclé et a également dit avoir suivi un certain entraînement pour se préparer au shooting. Elle s'est également dite déçue des critiques, qui se sont attardées à son physique plutôt qu'au côté artistique des images, qui lui ont beaucoup plu.

The model defended herself against anorexia rumors. She reminded her ballet training that gave her a ripped body and also mentionned having followed a certain training routine to prepare for the shoot. She also stated being disappointed by the critics, that gave more attention to her physical appearance than to the artistic potential of the pictures, which she loved a lot.

CE QUE J'EN PENSE

MY OPINION

Je dois d'abord dire que je suis un fan de Karlie depuis ses débuts comme mannequin et que je suis content de la notoriété qu'elle a acquise avec les années. Quant à ces photos, je comprends parfaitement la controverse qui les entoure. Bien que je les trouve magnifiques (regardez la dernière image où elle est complètement nue : PARFAITE), j'avoue qu'elles ont quelque chose de troublant. Le corps de Karlie est exagéré et transformé en une oeuvre d'art, mais malheureusement, de telles images peuvent avoir un mauvais effet sur les lectrices. Je crois donc que Franca Sozzani aurait dû faire preuve de plus de jugement quant à la direction photo, ou du moins quant au titre de l'éditorial, The Body, qui idéalise ainsi le corps de Karlie comme un corps parfait. En effet, ce n'est pas le cas, car je ne crois pas qu'il existe de corps parfait. Sozzani aurait donc dû mieux considérer l'impact de ces images au lieu de s'attarder principalement sur leur côté artistique (auquel je n'enlève rien!)

I must first say I am a fan of Karlie since her beginnings as a model and that I am happy of the fame she got with the years. As for these pictures, I totally understand the controversy surrounding them. While I find them stunning (look at that last fully naked picture: PERFECT), I admit they have something disturbing. Karlie's body is exaggerated and transformed  in a piece of art, but unfortunately, such photos can have a bad effect on the readers. I therefore think Franca Sozzani should've showed more judgement regarding the art direction, or at least the title of the spread, The Body, which idealize Karlie's body as the perfect one. Indeed, it is not, because I think there's no such thing as a perfect body. Sozzani should've consequently given more consideration to the impact of this imagery instead of focusing mainly on their artistic potential (to which I take nothing!)
